History

Bartitsu was created in London around 1899 by the engineer Edward William Barton-Wright, who had learned jujutsu in Japan. He mixed it with boxing, savate and Pierre Vigny's stick fighting to make a self-defence system for gentlemen.

His Bartitsu Club (1900–1902) brought Japanese teachers such as Yukio Tani to Britain. The club closed, but it helped start the jiu-jitsu boom in Europe, and the art has been revived since the 2000s.
