History
Lucha canaria is the traditional wrestling of the Canary Islands, believed to go back to the Guanche people who lived there before the Spanish conquest. Wrestlers face each other in a sand circle (terrero), holding the rolled-up leg of the opponent's shorts.
A wrestler loses a fall (agarrada) if any part of the body except the feet touches the sand; bouts are usually best of three falls. Matches are played between teams of twelve wrestlers, in a festive atmosphere.
