History

Muay Lao is the traditional boxing of Laos. Like its neighbours Muay Thai, Pradal Serey (Kun Khmer) and Lethwei, it uses punches, kicks, knees and elbows, and fights open with a ritual dance accompanied by music.

The kickboxing styles of mainland Southeast Asia grew up side by side over centuries, and each country now claims its own name and history for them. Muay Lao is less documented in writing than its neighbours; it is practised in local festivals and in gyms in Vientiane and other towns.
