How to choose a school

Seven things to check before you join.

  1. Try before you pay. A good school lets you take one or two free or cheap classes. Be wary of long contracts on day one.
  2. Check the teacher. Ask about their grade, who trained them and which federation or association the school belongs to. Check the federations list.
  3. Watch a full class. Do senior students help beginners? Is there a warm-up, technique and partner drills? Does the teacher correct everyone?
  4. Safety first. Good mats, first aid, control in sparring and respect for injuries. Nobody should get hurt as a routine.
  5. Your goal. Self-defence, competition, fitness or tradition: choose the art and school that serve it. Use the quiz and comparisons.
  6. Price and timetable. Ask about every cost: joining fee, insurance, grading exams, uniform. The timetable must fit your week.
  7. Atmosphere. Respect, no humiliation, and room for children, women and beginners. If you don't feel welcome, look elsewhere.
