Kajukenbo was created in 1947 at the Palama Settlement in Honolulu, Hawaii, by five martial artists who wanted a practical system for the tough streets of the time. Its name joins the arts it combined: KA (karate), JU (judo and jujutsu), KEN (kenpo) and BO (Chinese and Western boxing).
Adriano Emperado became its leading figure, and the style spread through the United States, especially through military bases.
