El camino del Taekwondo

Guía disponible por ahora solo en inglés.

Técnicas clave

Roundhouse kick (dollyo chagi)
The most used scoring kick: fast, from the front leg or the back leg.
Back kick
A spinning kick that drives the heel straight into the body.
Axe kick
The leg rises high and drops down onto the target.
Poomsae
Forms performed alone, judged on accuracy, power and balance.

Leyendas

Steven Lopez
American Olympic champion and one of the greatest competitors of his era.
Jade Jones
British fighter who won Olympic gold twice.
Hadi Saei
Iranian double Olympic champion, famous for his fighting intelligence.

Reglas

Olympic bouts use electronic body protectors and head sensors. Spinning kicks and kicks to the head score more than simple body kicks, which is why taekwondo fights are full of spectacular techniques.

Cómo empezar

Many clubs welcome children and adults. A white dobok (uniform) is all you need at first; later you will add a body protector, shin and forearm guards and a mouth guard for sparring.

Historia

Taekwondo was born in South Korea after 1945, when several schools (kwans) mixed the karate some masters had learned during the Japanese occupation with Korean kicking traditions such as taekkyon. The name taekwondo — "the way of the foot and fist" — was adopted in 1955.

Two organisations grew apart: the ITF, founded by General Choi Hong-hi in 1966, and the WTF (today World Taekwondo), created in 1973. The Kukkiwon in Seoul became the world headquarters for grading. Taekwondo was a demonstration sport at Seoul 1988 and has been an official Olympic sport since Sydney 2000.

¿Sabías que…?

  • Olympic taekwondo uses electronic body protectors and helmets that score kicks automatically.
  • Kicks to the head and spinning kicks score more points than punches.
  • Taekwondo is one of the most practised martial arts in the world.
  • The forms are called poomsae (World Taekwondo) or tul (ITF).
  • Britain's Jade Jones won Olympic gold in 2012 and 2016.
